Finally, after several NintendoNintendo Directs and a ton of leaks, Nintendo finally took the wraps off of its next cash cow. The Nintendo Switch 2 is now official, and it brings some notable changes.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is official. What’s new?
The company posted the first official trailer, and it did the classic thing where the old device gradually morphs into the new device. In this case, we see a classic Nintendo Switchclassic Nintendo Switch gradually transform into a Switch 2. This is a great way to see what things have changed since the first model.
Firstly, the Switch 2 is bigger than the original. Rumor has it that the screen will be 8.2 inches; however, we’ll need to wait for that information. In any case, you’re going to have a more immersive viewing experience. Another thing we notice about the chassis is that it might gain a matte texture as opposed to the more glossy plastic we saw on the OG Switch.
Next up, the ports on the system seem to be the same but with one exception. We see the USB-C port pop up on the bottom (for docking and charging), but we also see one pop up on top of the system. It looks like this will be for accessories, but we don’t know yet.
Nintendo fixed one of the biggest gripes that OG Switch users dealt with, that tiny and pitiful kickstand. The kickstand on the Switch 2 now stretches the width of the system, and it looks like it will be sturdier than what we got just seven years ago. Not only that, but it’s adjustable. You can raise or lower your switch to the proper angle you want.
What about the Joy-cons?
Just like the system itself, the Joy-Cons have gotten bigger. It seems that Nintendo is going for a sleeker look with the Switch 2. Rather than having colored Joy-Cons, they will be the same matte black as the system, but they’ll just have colored accents. For instance, there will be a red/blue ring under the joysticks. Also, the side of the Joy-Cons will have colored plastic.
The colored sections on the side of the Joy-Cons will stick out a fair bit, and they’ll house some buttons just like the original Switch cons. It looks like detaching them will be a bit easier, as the button to do so might be bigger. Taking the Joy-Cons off of the original Switch was always a pain.
Speaking of detaching them, one of the sights we associate most with the Switch is the sight of the Joy-Cons falling into place on the sides of the system. Well, the Joy-Cons on the Switch 2 will attach directly to the console. To detach them, you’ll just pull outward.
Dock, and other details
During the second part of the trailer, we see the new Switch dock. This one looks larger to accommodate the larger system. Also, it’s more rounded at the top. We also got a look at the new Switch 2 controller skeleton. The Joy-Cons will lock into those the same way as they do the console.
Moving on, the final screen does confirm backwards compatibility with the original Switch games. Nintendo’s been good about offering backwards compatibility. Heck, we remember playing GameCube games on our Wii Us back in the day. The Switch 2 will play both physical and digital Switch games.
There is a disclaimer saying that some original Switch games won’t be compatible with the Switch 2, but we didn’t get any information on how many. The company said that details will be shared on the company website at a later date.
Lastly, we got a date! April 2nd, 2025. That’s when this system will officially launch. Since Nintendo just gave us a sneak peek of the system, the company would be CRAZY not to give us more information about it during its next Direct. So, we’ll all be waiting at the edge of our seats for this upcoming announcement.
