Netflix Top 10: The most-watched series in the world right now

Netflix subscribers have flocked to a gritty new Western TV series starring Taylor Kitsch that’s essentially an anti-Yellowstone, turning it into the most-watched show worldwide on the streaming giant this week

The six-episode series American Primeval from Peter Berg stars Kitsch as a hardened frontiersman, and it’s clearly struck a chord with viewers — arguably becoming Netflix’s first must-watch hit of 2025, with a gripping storytelling and brutal action sequences that have helped it race up the chart. Netflix publishes its ranking of the hottest TV shows (and, separately, of movies) each week, so we'll take a closer look at American Primeval below, as well as the rest of what's hot on the streamer at the moment.

American Primeval -- #1 on Netflix

There's actually a true story behind American Primeval, which is top 10 Netflix series in 84 countries this week. "I read an article on something called the Mountain Meadows Massacre," Berg said in a Netflix promotional interview, recounting a story he found about the Utah war. “[It] was something that interested me, and I started doing a lot of research on it.”

Berg and Kitsch have previously collaborated on several great projects in the past, like Friday Night Lights and the feature film Lone Survivor. The show stars Kitsch as Isaac, a traumatized man struggling to overcome his demons, and it's set in 1857 -- a time when much of what would become America was still a wild and untamed frontier. Coincidentally, this series also marks the second Netflix collaboration between Berg, Kitsch, and showrunner Eric Newman (Griselda, Narcos, The Watcher), who all previously worked together on 2023’s Painkiller.

“Brigham Young and the Mormons feel as though the military is about to attack them at any point in time, so they’ve started their own army called the Nauvoo Legion,” Berg explained, about the story told in American Primeval. “The American Army is concerned with getting the Mormons out of Utah territory, so they’re nervous that they’re going to die fighting the Mormons.

"The Shoshone and the Paiute tribes are being squeezed from their lands by both sides, so they feel like they’re getting ready to die. The miners and the trappers at Fort Bridger are all seeing their lives extinguished by larger trapper companies who are coming in and squeezing them out. Everybody is anxious from the get-go, and everyone is truly fighting to stay alive.”
