Popular Chinese smartphone maker HONOR’s CEO Zhao Ming has resigned. HONOR has mentioned personal reasons as the main reason behind the resignation of Ming. HONOR made the announcement through its communication channels, confirming earlier rumors about Zhao’s departure.
Former Huawei CEO Li Jian will now lead HONOR
As the current HONOR CEO resigns, ex-Huawei CEO Li Jian has stepped in to occupy the vacant position. According to Huawei Central, the company cited health issues as the reason for Zhao’s departure. However, specific details of the health concerns remain undisclosed. Honor emphasized its respect for Zhao’s decision and its commitment to a smooth leadership transition to the next CEO.
Li Jian, who will now take the role of HONOR CEO, has a wealth of experience from his time at Huawei. Jian joined Huawei in 2001 and became a member of the brand’s Supervisory Board in 2017. Before becoming CEO of Huawei, Jian previously served as Vice Chairman, Director, and President of the Human Resources Department.
“The Board of Directors of Honor Device Co. Ltd. announced on January 17, 2025, that Mr George Zhao has resigned from his positions as Director and CEO of the company due to personal reasons. The company and the Board of Directors sincerely appreciate Mr Zhao’s outstanding contributions to the company during his tenure. With the approval of the Board of Directors, Mr Jian Li has been appointed to succeed Mr Zhao”, according to HONOR Newsroom.
Zhao Ming played a pivotal role in HONOR’s success
While the HONOR CEO Ming resigns, it’s worth adding that he played a pivotal role in the company’s success over the years. After taking over the company in 2015, he steered it to become the number one online smartphone brand in China. HONOR maintained the position for several consecutive quarters.
Furthermore, under his leadership, HONOR also became Russia’s number-one smartphone brand at the end of 2019, surpassing Samsung. Ming also steered HONOR into reaching the number two spot in the overall Chinese smartphone market in 2020.
