Synthesia Raises $180M Series D to Transform Enterprise AI Video Communications

Synthesia, the world’s leading AI-powered video communications platform, has announced the successful close of its $180 million Series D funding round. The round was led by NEA, with participation from new investors WiL (World Innovation Lab), Atlassian Ventures, and PSP Growth, alongside existing backers GV, MMC Ventures, and FirstMark. This latest funding round values Synthesia at $2.1 billion, establishing the company as the UK’s most valuable generative AI media company and a global leader in enterprise AI video solutions.

The funds will drive Synthesia’s next phase of growth, supporting continued product innovation, talent expansion, and the company’s global expansion in key markets, including North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. To date, Synthesia has raised over $330 million in total funding.

“This new investment will help us develop a new generation of AI-powered video experiences that are interactive, real-time, and personalized, offering possibilities we could have only imagined when we founded the company in 2017. I’m excited to bring these experiences to our over 60,000 customers, which range from the world’s largest brands to thousands of small businesses that use Synthesia to communicate internally and externally with unmatched engagement and efficiency,” said Victor Riparbelli, CEO and co-founder of Synthesia.

Strategic Growth and Global Impact

The funding will accelerate Synthesia’s development of its cutting-edge AI-powered video platform. The company’s latest innovation, Synthesia 2.0, promises to redefine video production and distribution for enterprise use cases such as learning and development, sales enablement, customer support, marketing, and business operations. Recent features include:

  • Personal Avatars: Custom AI avatars created in minutes that speak over 30 languages.
  • AI Screen Recorder: A Chrome extension that records and edits professional videos seamlessly.
  • AI Video Assistant: Converts documents or web pages into engaging videos with customizable templates.
  • Multilingual Video Player: Supports playback in multiple translations with advanced features like captions and intuitive controls.
  • Live Collaboration: Enables real-time teamwork on video creation.

In addition to its product innovations, Synthesia’s platform is trusted by over 60,000 businesses worldwide, including 60% of the Fortune 100. These organizations leverage Synthesia’s solutions to enhance engagement, streamline communication, and improve operational efficiency.

Philip Chopin, Managing Director at NEA UK, remarked, “NEA has a long history of supporting transformative companies, and we’re excited to partner with Synthesia as they shape the future of AI-powered communication. Synthesia’s commitment to enterprise-grade solutions and its impressive traction with customers — 60% of Fortune 100 companies are Synthesia customers — sets the company apart in a rapidly evolving market.”

Synthesia’s commitment to making video creation accessible to everyone has attracted support from prominent global investors. Aki Jiang and Clifford Cohn, Principals at WiL, shared their enthusiasm: “We are excited to partner with Synthesia and believe its groundbreaking AI-powered video platform is poised to revolutionize the way organizations communicate and create content. Synthesia’s ability to democratize video creation empowers any organization to deepen interactions with employees and customers alike, no matter the language or location.”

Momei Qu, Managing Director at PSP Growth, added, “There are a lot of exciting developments in AI, but few demonstrate real value and application like Synthesia. We are thrilled to support Synthesia’s growth and continued impact.”

According to Dealroom, Synthesia is now the largest generative AI media company in the UK by valuation and the second largest in the overall AI category. The company generates just over half of its revenue from the United States and has a global presence with offices in seven countries.

Yoram Wijngaarde, Founder and CEO of Dealroom, stated, “Synthesia's Series D signals that European AI is picking up where they left off in 2024. AI startups accounted for over 25% of European venture capital last year, up from 15% just four years ago. In one of the most significant technological waves in decades, Synthesia stands out among the emerging AI unicorns reshaping the landscape from this side of the Atlantic.”

Leadership and Ethical Innovation

As part of its growth strategy, Synthesia announced the appointment of Peter Hill as Chief Technology Officer. Hill brings a wealth of experience from 25 years at Amazon and two years as CEO and CPO of Wildfire Studios. His expertise will further strengthen Synthesia’s position as an industry leader.

Synthesia also prioritizes responsible AI development. In 2024, the company became the world’s first AI video company to achieve ISO 42001 compliance, setting a new standard for security and ethical AI use. In collaboration with Dr. Rumman Chowdhury and NIST, Synthesia conducted a public red team test to ensure the safety and transparency of its platform.
