Eugen Rochko, CEO of the decentralized social networking platform Mastodon, is handing over control to a nonprofit organization. In other words, Rochko is voluntarily handing over the reins of the platform to a nonprofit entity. Rochko is doing it at a time when Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have shown that the whims of a single person can upend an entire social networking platform.

Rochko will no longer have total control over Mastodon

In a blog post on Mastodon, Rochko announced his intention to allow a new nonprofit entity to take over the social networking company. Notably, Mastodon took some actions towards forming a US-based nonprofit nearly a year ago. Also, the tech brand will continue to exist as a “fundraising hub.” The network will continue to headquarter its operations overseas in Europe primarily.

“Our core mission remains the same: to create the tools and digital spaces where people can build authentic, constructive online communities free from ads, data exploitation, manipulative algorithms or corporate monopolies,” said the blog post.

Mastodon is in the process of a phased transition

Rochko has fulfilled his promise to keep the app free from the control of a single person. The company is planning to hand over key parts of the platform to a new entity in the next six months. This is a break from the usual model where one person controls all the power, like Twitter or Facebook. The transition will kick off with a careful look at the best legal frameworks.

For those unaware, Eugen Rochko founded Mastodon in 2016. The developers created it with the main idea of providing users with more control over their online social lives. The platform allows users to customize their timelines, connect with various communities, and run their own social spaces. Mastodon’s main goal has always been to give users real power to shape the platform. Notably, with over 800,000 monthly active users, Mastodon’s community is thriving at a fast pace.
