The availability of the first security patch of the year continues to expand to more Galaxy devices. Samsung has already pushed it to its latest flagship phones—both foldable and traditional—and the previous-generation Galaxy S23. Now, older models, such as the Galaxy S22 series and even the Galaxy Note 20 devices, are receiving Android’s January 2025 update.
January 2025 update now reaching the Galaxy S22 and Note 20 series
As reported by SamMobile, the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra are now receiving the January 2025 security patch. The update includes a ton of fixes for potential vulnerabilities. The S901U1, SM-S906U1, and SM-S908U1 models are getting it under the build numbers S901U1UES7EXL8, S906U1UES7EXL8, and S908U1UES7EXL8, respectively. Samsung’s 2022 flagship phones are on the “eligible for One UI 7” list. That said, it’ll probably take a while to arrive.
The company is also sending out the OTA to the legendary Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Both devices arrived in 2020 as the last in the Note lineup before Samsung replaced them with the Galaxy S Ultra. In this case, the SM-N981U1 and SM-N986U1 models are getting the new firmware under the respective build numbers N981U1UESBHXL1 and N986U1UESBHXL1. Android 13 was the latest big Android update for these phones, but they are still receiving security patches.
The report mentions that the OTAs are reaching carrier-free units in the US first. However, carrier-locked variants should also start receiving the notification in the coming days. As always, you can try to manually check for availability from Settings > Software update > Download and install.
As a reminder, the update fixes up to 51 vulnerabilities (29 in the Android core, 22 exclusive to Galaxy hardware and software). These vulnerabilities enabled potential remote code execution on your device. They also allowed attackers to change your phone’s notification settings.
Samsung still working on One UI 7
In related news, the Galaxy S24 series is getting a second January 2025 update. These devices should be the first to receive stable One UI 7 once it’s available. However, some sources suggest that users might have to wait as late as March for it. Currently, One UI 7 beta for the Galaxy S24 phones is awaiting an undated fourth update. On the other hand, the Galaxy S25 series will run One UI 7 out of the box.
