Amazon Alexa is not getting smarter anytime soon
Amazon Alexa AM AH

Among the major companies governing the tech landscape, the only one that hasn’t made any major moves in AI is Amazon. It has yet to release an all-encompassing AI platform like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot. Why is that? Well, Amazon explained that technical difficulties are the reason why Alexa hasn’t gotten its generative AI upgrade.

Back in 2023, Amazon held an event where it primarily talked about AI. The company talked about supercharging Alexa with some much more advanced models so it could perform closer to something like ChatGPT. If it had been launched promptly, it would have been the first generative model with voice input and output.

However, it never came to fruition, and features like ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live came out instead. This leaves Amazon far behind the curve. It’s behind Apple, and that’s saying A LOT!

Technical difficulties are holding Amazon Alexa back from getting smarter

At this point, we shouldn’t count on Amazon releasing a smarter Alexa for quite some time. We know that the company has been working hard on the technology, but its AI efforts have been pretty messy. Adding AI to an established voice assistant is tough to do because Amazon has to go through thousands of lines of existing code.

Along with that, Amazon explained one of the biggest issues it’s dealing with. According to a new report, Amazon is dealing with some pretty bad hallucinations. This is when a model basically makes up inaccurate information rather than telling the user that it doesn’t have the answer.

This is a major issue with every AI model on the market, but if Alexa is hallucinating so much that the company can’t implement the new models, then it might be a major issue for Amazon. The company wants the new Alexa to be correct “close to 100 percent of the time”. It’s sure much better than releasing a half-baked AI product to the market. We don’t want Alexa to wind up telling people to put glue on pizza!

Other than fixing the hallucinations, Amazon still wants to add child safety protocols, which is always important. All in all, Amazon still has a ton of work to do if it wants Alexa to be a proper competition for ChatGPT and Gemini. We don’t know when the company will release the new Alexa, but we know that it won’t be out for some time.
